Mistral is a model company. Large is a hosted, commercial tier, and the open models are a separate decision. Pick it when data residency, an API, or an open weight you can run yourself is the requirement. A non-technical writer will be happier in a chat product.

Hosted model
You call it from an app you build. There is less of a finished writing studio.
Open models
Mistral also releases open weights. Do not assume Large itself is free to download.
Efficiency
The smaller open models are the ones people run locally. Large is the one you rent.
Check before you pay

- API prices are usage-based. A quiet month and a product launch are not the same bill.
